A 10yr old boy who really understands kindness

http://www.sconestone.com/tabid/84/IndexId/233/Default.aspx

This information is from www.listentothechildren.net

In 2008, ten yr old Logan saw pictures of children in the West African Province of Sierra Leone, who were experiencing harships such as schools with no chairs, desks, or recreational equipment. They had few books and roofing that didn't help shelter them from the rain.

Logan wanted to inspire hope after seeing these children with no materials....so, he talked to his parents, teachers, and his community and convinced them to send a 40ft container filled with educational, building, and recreational materials to Sierra Leone!

This is quite the undertaking for a 10yr old, but his caring and concern was felt by everyone in his community. When the container was received in Sierra Leone, the people were very happy and the materials have helped to inspire hope and support education for the people of Sierra Leone.

Logan went on to create a short video, including animation, and a song written and performed by Terry Kelly. This video helps to share the message "Listen to the Children, A Journey of Sharing" with people everywhere.

What a great example of how ordinary people can make a big difference..spread kindness....even on another continent!!

I hope that you find Myth Number 2 an enjoyable and inspirational read and that you take up the challenge it offers. Don't expect any rocket science, instead a fresh look at some old ideas and some good ole common sense.

I was surfing on the internet and came across the above quote. I love it, it's brilliant. So simple, yet so incredibly powerful. How often have we thought of doing something kind, yet never got around to it and then it was too late? Has happened to me and I am sure it has happened to you too. A good reminder to never put off a kind act!

Sconestone a Powerful Symbol of Kindness and Goodwill

http://www.sconestone.com/StoriesofKindness/CommunityBlogDetails/tabid/84/IndexID/185/Default.aspx

While I am not the best blogger, I have had a really interesting journey with the Sconestone since receiving it earlier this week. The Sconestone is quite a powerful symbol of kindness.

I have shared the stone with Children, with religious leaders and with those down on their luck and I have found that the story and symbolism have a powerful affect on those that it touches.

We tend to be a community minded and I have continuous opportunities to talk to groups about our responsibility to community and to others. Sharing the Sconestone has been one of the most powerful communication tools I have encountered to encourage others to take action on behalf of others.

To date our sharing of the Stone has been on a one to one basis and with small groups. Over the next few days is our hope to share the Stone with a few larger groups before it gets passed along to the next keeper. Crystal and I are happy to have this symbol in our lives for a short time.

My search for a pair of Olympic mittens was starting to resemble a quest for the Holy Grail. Everywhere I looked in Nova Scotia for these cute mittens was met with failure. Sold out, sold out and yet again, sold out. Mark Smith, a father of one of Skye and Iona's friends is the Coach of Canada's Women's Softball Team. He was heading to Vancouver just before Christmas for a team meeting and had some of his girls out there check the shops for them. JACKPOT!!! Mark returned home with the elusive mittens. Thank you so much Mark for taking the time to organize this, it was really kind of you. We shall be joining in with all Canadians to cheer on our athletes this February, and will be wearing our mittens with pride.

Roger and the elastic band

http://www.sconestone.com/StoriesofKindness/CommunityBlogDetails/tabid/84/IndexID/172/Default.aspx

One of my more unique challenges when I carve a stone is how to do consistent measurements on the stone itself. Over time I found out that one of the best ways was to use an elastic band to wrap around my carving and then use it as a ruler of sorts to draw lines onto the stone. I then use those lines to mark the areas to carve and sand. Simple but effective. The challenge however is finding the right size and width elastic band.

Last week my trusty elastic band I had been using finally gave up the ghost and I was forced on a quest to find a replacement. We only have one stationary shop in town which I was sad to discover had closed as I pulled out front in the rain to a window covered with brown paper. Next stop was the Sobey's grocery store. i was successful in finding a bag of elastics, but they were all thin and multi-coloured. Not a match for what I needed. I then decided to walk around to the local Home Hardware to try my luck. Upon entering the store I bumped into Roger who is always around to lend a helping hand and swap a word or two. I explained to Roger what i was after and he immediately took me to a wrack that had a bag of multiple sized elastics. i thanked Roger and then held up the bag to see if I could see an elastic in the bag that would fit. he asked me what I was doing and I said I was actually just after one elastic band of the right size and then described what I was after.

Roger was funny, he said to heck with buying a whole bag just to get one elastic band and immediately marched me over to the check out counter to rummage through their own elastic bands beneath the counter. And presto, there it was, the perfect elastic band. Roger handed it over and said Merry Christmas. Thank you Roger for your good nature and act of kindness. And just so you know it has been put to good work already in my next carving. Merry Christmas.

3) Childrens Hospice Association Scotland

Children's Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) is a Scottish charity established to provide hospice services in Scotland for children and young people with life-limiting conditions.

www.chas.org.uk

4) The National Trust for Scotland

A special celebration of an internationally loved Scottish writer

The National Trust for Scotland was first approached to take the lead on delivering this project in 2004. This project is the largest and most ambitious project the charity has even undertaken.

We will create a new world class Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, carry out a major re-interpretation of the cottage where burns was born, deliver exciting new education facilities and enhance the Burns Monument, Brig o’ Doon and Auld Kirk. The new facilities will be open by Summer next year.

Burns is central to the life and culture of the nation and he is widely regarded as a Scottish icon. The Trust will safeguard the place of his birth and create a new museum that will preserve the Burns legacy for future generations to come.

The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum project will cost 21m this is made up of:
£5.8 m Heritage Lottery Fund
£5.5m contribution from the Scottish Government
£250,000 from Scottish Enterprise Ayrshire
Land in Alloway worth an estimates worth of £2.885m from South Ayrshire Council
Trust sill has 3.8 million to raise

5) The Robert Burns Grove

Join us in planting a Grove of native trees in honour of Robert Burns and the 250th anniversary of his birth in 2009 - acknowledging his love of and connection to the land he celebrated through poetry and song.

Find out about Trees for Life’s work to restore the Caledonian Forest.

6) Save Gillies Hill Campaign

An area of huge Scottish historical importance is to be destroyed.

Gillies Hill, the historic and environmentally vital landscape on the outskirts of Stirling, is in danger of being destroyed by quarrying.

http://www.savegillieshill.org.uk/

7) Change the name of "Prestwick Glasgow International Airport" in Scotland to "Robert Burns' International Airport".

As it is the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns' birth it seems the perfect time to change the name of "Prestwick Glasgow International Airport" in Scotland to "Robert Burns' International Airport".

The airport's position should be known internationally, as it is situated near Robert Burns' birth place, in what is known as Burns Country; in the south west of Scotland.

The airport sits about halfway between Glasgow and Turnberry (where the Open golf tournament is being held in 2009). The owners say that the word Glasgow is included so that businesses know where abouts in Scotland the airport is situated. In other words no-one knows where Burns Country is situated. Then isn't it time people did know where Burns Country is?

http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/robert-burns-international-airport.html

Happy Holidays to all and thanks for all the amazing support and encouragement, it means the world to us.

Please tell a friend to join us at RT Burns we would love to have them and to hear from all of you.

Warm regards

http://www.sconestone.com/FollowtheJourney/StoriesofKindness/CommunityBlogDetails/tabid/84/IndexID/166/Default.aspx

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt">I bet many people, like me, try at all costs to avoid the shopping malls and stores this time of year. People are rushing, pushing, frustrated, and sometimes just plain rude! This is when I think to myself, isn't the holidays the time we are supposed to be spreading cheer, thankfulness, kindness, and compassion?

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt">What I'm about to tell you may contradict everything you've ever thought....this is the PERFECT time to spread kindness...when people are least expecting. This is the time when people will be most shocked and surprised to be the recipient of a small, kind act.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt">The true story... many years ago, when I was in primary school, it was Christmas time, and my parents were struggling with finances. They didn't know how they would scrape together money to buy presents for us kids, besides trying to keep the clunky car running and food on the table!!! My dad is a humble, hard-working man, who always kept our house running fixing anything that needed fixing!

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt">Several days before Christmas, my father was at a music store looking at used pianos. My mother had often said she missed playing piano, and the joyful sound of music in the house. He thought long and hard about how he could surprise her with a piano and bring some happiness to our home, but had no idea how he could afford even a used piano (about $500 U.S.)

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt">The day before Christmas, he stopped in again just to look at the piano which he pictured sitting in our house, with my mother playing and us children singing along. As he turned to leave the store....a man who he never met approached him. This man handed him a white envelope and simply said "Get the piano for your wife, so that she may fill your home with God's music. God Bless & Merry Christmas!"

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt">My dad was so stunned; he didn't know what to do. He said thanks as the man walked away and left, never to be seen again. My dad, still in shock, peeked into the envelope, and saw several hundred dollar bills. Tears welled up in his eyes, and he just stood still for several minutes.....which felt like hours. As he realized what had happened, he turned to the store manager and said, “Please tell me how I can have this piano delivered for Christmas!”

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt">This is a true story. Now, remember it doesn’t have to be a large act of kindness; kindness comes in all shapes and sizes. I will never forget this experience from my childhood and the many years of joy we had!

oin together to celebrate a special person, or a special event, with a grove of trees in the Scottish Highlands.

A grove of trees is a lasting gift or memorial. Instead of giving someone a single tree, you can set up a grove to allow friends and family to plant a number of trees for the same person or occasion. We will set up a page on this website to tell people about the grove, and where you can see how people have responded. Your dedications will appear on our website and be read out as the trees are planted.

It’s £50 for the Web Page, and the first 8 trees for the Grove. Each additional £5 donated towards the grove allows us to plant another tree.

Hello to all,

Happy Holidays and health and Happiness in 2009 for all!!

This brings me to the purpose of my message to all of you out there. We all know a person, friend or family who has been touched by Breast Cancer and it really is a horrible disease.

I have been in contact with a most wonderful lady Pamela Walker and her most wonderful cause she is involved in, here is some info:

Breakthrough are funding the first and only dedicated breast cancer research unit at Edinburgh's Western General Hospital so all the money from the Burns campaign will be going towards our work right here in Scotland which is really exciting and yielding great results already in it's first year.

Have a wee look at there website www.breakthrough.org.uk/scotland

We as a group at our RT Burns would like to participate in this most wonderful Charity event and help raise funds for this amazing charity.

Hello to all and Happy Holidays to all and Health and Happiness in 2010!!!

Thanks for all the amazing support, you are all wonderful, it means alot.

I plan to head back to Bonny Scotland in 2010 with Nicholas to attend a Grant Clan Gathering and hopefully carry some important Historical Documents and Grant Family Tree information complied by a friend Ken Fluto, he has worked tirelessly on all this important Historical Information. We hope to have it placed in a museum in Scotland with other Grant Clan family information.

I had the great honor to be in Edinburgh this past July and attend The Gathering with Nicholas and being in Scotland really brought it all home for me. Our branch of the Grant family had not been back home for a very long time. Scotland really got into my blood, heart and soul.

I wanted to say that family and friends are important especially in time of year and we should all be proud of who we are and where we come from.

Here is the verse I wrote and I would love to hear your feedback on it:

WE WILL GO HOME ACROSS THE OCEAN, WE WILL GO HOME

We will go home across the ocean, we will go home

To a land far away and to
most now unknown

Our hearts and soul long for
the thistle that is home grown

We will go home across the
ocean, we will go home

We sailed to the New World
our future most unknown

The harshness of the New
World was a reality that set an uncertain tone

To seek fame and fortune
was for sure was on many a minds

The site that unfolded
before our eyes was like a grand treasure find

The never ending
wilderness and winter months proved to be most unkind

So far from family and
friends, an ocean and it seemed a lifetime away

Within a wee short time we
thought is it worth it, should we all stay

As the brutal snow and
cold set in all we could do was to hope and pray

Bonny Scotland did call us
back home, the wind carried her cry across the sea

To brave a bold New World
, to start a new life with hearts and soul’s set free

The furs a plenty, the
water like a looking glass, and as far as the eyes could see

Was a mighty great army of
soldiers with arms swaying in the wind, the tree

The Highlands call us back
home and echo our names recorded for all time

Where have you gone, will
you come back home, are you going quite fine

Many are lost forever in
time, away from home, their souls cry like a church chime

We will go home across the
ocean, we will go home

To a land far away and to
most unknown

Our hearts and soul long
for the thistle that is home grown

The many Clans left Bonny
Scotland with high hopes and dreams for a fresh start

They left many family and
friends behind and the heavy hearts made it hard to part

Across the pond seemed
like a lifetime away and was like a distant speck on a chart

It’s been many a
year since the shores of Bonny Scotland were seen

To finally come home and
touch the soil seemed like a mere distant dream

We now seek our ancestral
home and flow to the sea like a river stream

We will go home across the
ocean, we will go home

To a land far away and to
most unknown

Our hearts and soul long
for the thistle that is home grown

We will go
home……….at long last

Skye and Iona, my twin daughters were away with their school softball team, and had stopped off for dinner at a roadside diner. Each girl is assigned $10.00 from their school to go towards their meals when they dine out, so collectively the two of them and their friend had $30.00 to go towards their dinner.

There was an elderly couple sitting in the booth behind the girls and they were listening in on their conversation about what to order to get the most 'bang for their buck". After some creative accounting the girls placed their order and waited for their dinner to arrive. The elderly couple finished up their dinner and left. When the girls had finished their dinner, the waitress came up to them and told them that the elderly couple had paid for their meal. I wish I could have been there to have seen the look of complete shock and surprise on their faces. They couldn't believe that complete strangers would do something so kind for them.

This happened 2 years ago, and I still send up a mental thank you to the kind hearted couple who acted out of kindness and paid for their dinner.

Whilst cozying up in front of the television a couple of nights ago, myself, Kari and my twin daughters Skye & Iona were thankful for not having to go out in the howling snow storm that was raging outside our windows. The snow was blowing sideways as the wind was thudding into the side of our home. And around about 10pm my wife Kari said someone was coming up the driveway, she could see lights. I was shocked as there was probably about 10 cm of snow on the drive. I got up and looked out the window and quickly realized it was Chris our neigbour coming up the drive with his plow.

It started last year when out of the blue Chris would appear at all hours of the night to plow us out of snow storms. Even though Chris knows I have a snow blower, he seems to take great pleasure out of helping us. He's just one of those super nice guys who enjoys lending a helping hand. When Chris came up to our front door I went out and invited him in for a hot cuppa tea and we spent and hour catching up on time gone by.

Not only did Chris do a kind act for us, but he also firmed our friendship. Thank you Chris for being the good guy you are.
