Introducing the new Keepers of the Stone - John & Janet

http://sconestone.com/tabid/82/IndexId/262/Default.aspx

We are John & Janet Datchens, from Gloucester, England, where we’ve lived since 1980, both having been brought up in the NW suburbs of London – Janet was born in Yorkshire and her parents took her to London as a small child, John was born just outside London, in Bushey, Hertfordshire, and lived in London throughout his childhood and early adulthood.

We are both 58 years young, have been married for 31 years and have vowed to age disgracefully after having spent too many responsible years being reasonably correct about most things. Janet worked as a Civil Servant in London, then spent some time in similar work in Gloucester, as well as several years in retail, though she hasn’t worked outside of our home for some years now. John is normally a Salesman or Sales Manager, usually covering very large sales territories up to the whole of the UK and Ireland but, just before Christmas 2011, John was declared redundant and has been actively looking for a new role since then.

With a long-term interest in birdwatching, nature and a love of wild places, we have managed to visit many parts of the British Isles and were thus exposed to all sorts of different music, from Irish pub-singing to Scottish Ceilidh music. It seems to have been inevitable that we would discover Runrig at some point and so we did some good many years ago. We didn’t get to our first live Runrig performance until 2007 and now we’re looking forward to the coming tour season.

So, it was Runrig that took us to Scone Palace in August 2009 where we first met The Sconestone and its creator, actually being able to hold the stone in its pristine state and photograph Warren displaying his wonderful creation! It felt special then, but it has developed a somewhat careworn patina since then and has even more character as a result of all those hands caressing it around the World. Indeed, one friend of ours said her hands “tingled for ages” after holding The Sconestone in Winchester, where we were so honoured to be given the privilege of becoming the 31st “Keepers” overall and the first in England!

We had spent the day with friends Lionel (the 30th Keeper) and Paul (Tiz) Tizzard wandering around and taking in the sights of Winchester (Hampshire, UK) before meeting up with more friends to enjoy a meal and a drink before heading off to see another great band, COAST, play at The Railway in Winchester. Towards the end of a terrific evening of music and great fun Paul Eastham (Singer/Musician/Writer with COAST) then announced that he had a presentation to make – we were intrigued, wondering what was going to occur!

Imagine our surprise then, when Paul looked at us and called us onto the stage, was he really looking at us? The shove in the back from Lionel, Tiz or Iain Bayne (Manager of COAST and drummer with Runrig) confirmed it so, clueless as to what was happening (were we going to be given the Oldest Swingers in Town Award?) we ventured forth only then to discover what the term “gobsmacked” really means! Paul removed The Sconestone from a cloth bag (embroidered by a friend of Lionel’s) and passed it to us, announcing as he did so that we had been chosen to be “Keepers of The Sconestone”!

Then it happened! Me, the salesman schooled in public speaking and presentation speechless with a microphone in my face! What was The Sconestone all about? Hopefully, my faltering description gave the Winchester audience some idea about what the Journey of Kindness meant, where it came from and what it meant to us to be chosen. By now Janet was almost in tears, but still managing to berate certain parties for being able to keep such a secret from us/her!

We were also able to carry out the first “act of kindness” at the gig! Paul announced that a couple had become engaged and he also had them come up onto the stage to be embarrassed! I took the opportunity to place the Sconestone in their hands in order to “bless” their engagement – pics to follow!

Bonjour! I am the new Keeper of the Sconestone

http://www.sconestone.com/tabid/82/IndexId/261/Default.aspx

My name is Lionel MOREL, I am 49 years old and I live in a tiny village on the slopes of the Northern Alps of France, very close to Switzerland (Geneva) and to Italy. I am single, my girlfriend Sylvie is Canadian from Quebec. I live in a small mountain farm belonging to my father but I am a free lance language teacher in my valley. I have been teaching abroad for several years. I taught in Scotland, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and now in France. I am very fond of Celtic culture and music and I have been a Runrig fan since 1986. I attended the Runrig concert at Scone Palace when the Sconestone started its journey of kindness. I never thought that day I would have the honour to be the keeper of the Stone, but I am now so proud and happy.

I hope to be a good keeper of the Stone and I promise to do all my best so that the Stone brings kindness and happiness in France, Switzerland and many other places where I plan to go. I know already a few things about the "keeper's contract" but I thank you very much in advance if you give me all the hints I need to know about the Sconestone.

http://www.sconestone.com/tabid/82/IndexId/260/Default.aspx

After sharing some great times and excellent company with the Sconestone, I took it for its last outing with me as Keeper to the very south of Germany, the little town of Waldshut-Tiengen, where my very dear friends Linda and Wolfgang live. As they are among the kindest and most hospitable people I know, and love Scotland, its people and its history (and Runrig), it seemed apropriate to share the Stone with them before handing it over to the next Keeper. Here's a picture of them with the Sconestone, at their dining-table, the heart of their home and the scene of many excellent and very happy meals together with their local and international friends - a good symbol of their generosity and hospitality, and their inspiringly positive approach to life, despite all its hardships. The Sconestone will be leaving with another lovely layer to what Warren thinks of as its 'aura', growing over time as it moves around on its journey.

I'm grateful to have been part of that journey and very happy indeed to hand the Sconestone now to its next Keeper, Lionel Morel of France, who will take the Stone to new people and places.

Mòran taing agus beannachd leibh, Warren agus Kari, agus soraidh leis a' Chloich!

Getting Around

http://sconestone.com/tabid/82/IndexId/259/Default.aspx

Getting around

I've been having a lot of fun showing the Stone to various groups I teach, of all ages and backgrounds, and to colleagues and friends, and seeing the reactions. Colleagues have also 'borrowed' it to use in class and to show to their own familes and friends - and one, a cellist on the side, has been 'giving it a wee break' by playing to it!. Some who see it and hear about it are most impressed by the workmanship, others by the story of the Sconestone, some by its travels, others by the 'pledge of kindness' aspect - but one thing they all have in common - they just can' t wait to hold it once they see it, and are more than happy to pledge (extra) deeds of kindness in return.

After its outing at the ELTA Members Day (see last blog) the Sconestone actually made it to cover picture status in the autumn edition of the magazine, and there are pictures of members pledging deeds of kindness.

It's very gratifying to see how engaing an item the Stone is wherever you take it, and how people , however sceptical or mystified initially, somehow warm to it and its purpose once they actually get their hands on it...

I think there must be an awful lot of kindness spreading around this part of the country these days!

The Sconestone has been circulating in language-classes around Cologne and when the English Language Teachers' Association of the Rhineland, ELTA Rhine had its annual Members' Day last weekend, the Stone was receoved with great interest - and will doubtless be finding its way into a good few more classrooms in the near future. The ELTA Newsletter Editor was present and has included an article about the Sconestone in the coming edition.

An article about the Sconestone in the ELTA Newsletter:

The Sconestone

The beautiful hand-carved Sconestone, in its equally beautiful hand-carved wooden box, was a highlight of Members' day. The current Keeper of the Stone brought it along for all to see and hear about it.

The Sconestone was carved by a Canadian of Scottish ancestry, Warren MacLeod, based in Nova Scotia, in honour of the 'Year of Homecoming' in Scotland in 2009, when people from all over the world were encouraged to come back to their ancestral home, and learn about their Scottish roots.

Warren was coming to Scotland not just to go to his family's area but also to attend a music festival led by Runrig (one of many cultural events which took place throughout 2009) in the town of Scone, which used to be the Royal town of Scotland, where the kings were crowned. Now, the kings were crowned on a square slab of stone known as the Stone of Scone, or the Stone of Destiny. According to legend, Jacob in the Old Testamant laid his head on that very stone when he was in the desert, dreaming of the ladder between heaven and earth, and over the years it had made its way to Scotland. It was then stolen by the English and placed in Westminster Abbey, whence it was stolen back by a group of Scottish students in the 1950s, but it was taken back to Westminster before being returned to Edinburgh Castle in 1996. There remains to this day controversy as to whether the stone in the Castle is the original or a copy, with the orginal safely hidden in the care of a 'keeper' elsewhere in Scotland; we Scots know what we believe!

And so, inspired by the story of the Stone of Scone, and wanting to bring something from New Scotland to Old Scotland, Warren MacLeod carved the Sconestone. He used as his basis the decorated stone orbs which have been found in several neolithic sites and graves around Scotland. As nobody knows the symbolism or function of these orbs, Warren invested the Sconestone with his own meaning - it carries around the world the message of Scottish hospitality and kindness and brotherly love between nations, and is passed on periodically to a new 'Keeper', whose job it is to tell people about it, let people hold it, ask questions, and encourage acts of kindness.

At the concert given by Runrig in Scone it was presented by no less than Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond, to its very first Keeper, the Rev. Neil Galbraith, a tireless charity worker from Glasgow, whose work in Africa is supported by Runrig. Now it's come to Germany, and it's time to pass it around here and let it work its magic. If you're interested in borrowing it to show to classes or other groups, or just seeing it yourself, get in touch.

But remember, if you touch it, it comes with consequences: you are pledging to do an act of kindness to your fellow humans, for animals or for the planet; something extra, however large or small, that you wouldn't be doing anyway.

That is one of these places where traditionally the veil between this real world and the 'Otherworld', the spiritual world, is 'thin'.

The Stone has been held by a group of women who volunteer for the Highland Hospice shop, in Dingwall. My Mum took it along to their Christmas Dinner and she explained what the Stone was all about. I was in Aberdeen so couldn't go along. The ladies were very interested in the story and the journey of the Sconestone. School is totally hectic just now with Christmas shows and parties, but the head teacher and I will make plans to do something special when we go back in January. She is very excited about the stone coming to our school and as the head of Maryburgh Primary too, we may do something over there as well. The next stop for the stone was a trip down to Glasgow to a Runrig concert where all my Riggy friends got to hold the stone and pledge their own acts of kindness.
